Dave Thomas, founder of Wendy’s International and one of America’s most-loved personalities, died early this morning. According to the Columbus Dispatch (which I’m not linking to because they require registration now), Thomas passed away following a long battle with liver cancer. A company spokesman said that Thomas had the slow-growing cancer for more than a decade.
Thomas opened his first Wendy’s restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, in 1969. Today, there are about 6,000 Wendy’s throughout the United States and Canada. More importantly, Thomas founded numerous charities, including the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. The foundation helps raise awareness for the 134,000 foster children available for adoption, and helps make adoption more affordable.
Oddly, Wendy’s stock rose 60 cents today.
There are tons of things going on in the world today. Teenagers crashing planes, 3rd world countries taking away freedoms, the US economy taking a walk in the sewer, but for some reason the only thing people here at work are talking about is the new iMac.

Ok, it’s pretty slick. Yeah, it’s more reliable than a PC. Of course, it’s more innovative than anything we’ve ever seen from IBM. But no one is going to buy it. No one ever buys Mac’s. Why? No good games. If Steve Jobs wants us to start buying Macs, he better get Return to Castle Wolfenstein on there and tank that dumbass one-button mouse.
It seems the mullet resurgence is in full-force. Not only can you do an anthropological study of mullets but you can even own the action figures. Now you can recreate all the great mullet wars of 1982 in the comfort of your own home. Imagine your surprise when the “femullets” over take the “pimp-ass-midgie mullet” even though everyone knows the midgie-mullets have much more firepower.
The Zimbabwean government is about to inact a set of controversial laws which critics say are aimed at boosting President Robert Mugabe’s re-election bid in March, and includes a media bill banning foreigners from working as correspondents in the country. It also threatens jail sentences for journalists who violate tough rules.
The European Union is considering imposing sanctions over Mugabe’s land seizures, his drive against the media and the judiciary and his supporters’ campaign of violence in advance of the presidential elections.
As we’ve seen with Afghanistan, subjugation of the masses and total dissolvement of all freedoms is no reason for the US to get involved… unless, of course, they have oil or are capable of large amounts of terrorism. Don’t expect to see President Bush talking about this issue anytime soon.
