never growin’ up… just older

Need a good use of your time? Let this handy website put your life in perspective for you. I’m sure everybody has seen these things before, but it really makes you think. Think about what you ask? I don’t really know, but I do know that Walter Cronkite is alot older than I thought, and I remember the Challenger exploding like it was yesterday. To think, one day your kids will look at this and think back to September 11…

Trying Times in Air America

I’d want the house too. Gotta be over 12,000 sq.ft. in that thing. If you’re not sure what I’m talking about. Michael Jordan’s wife has filed for divorce. I am personally disgusted by divorce and I am especially perturbed by the way our legal system treats divorce. Unless there are extenuating circumstances like abuse, infidelity, etc., the person filing for divorce should get nothing.

It should feel like a punishment for breaking the vows that they professed in front of God and the community. You shouldn’t be able to live the highlife after a divorce. All this talk about being able to “perpetuate a lifestyle” is bullshit. That’s on of the perks of being married to a gazillionaire and now you’re not married to him. Time to get a job and shut your mouth. I think it should work that way regardless of gender.

In Jordan’s case, he can probably afford to pay her whatever she wants. But imagine some poor sap making $60,000/year whose wife divorces him and gets full custody of the kids. Forget about any infidelity or abuse or what have you. She just got tired of him. So now, he’s paying child support (which I fully believe in though it’s sad it has to be mandated) of about $1,500/month and alimony of $1,000/month. In simple math, the guy is making around $5,000/month, so now his alimony and child support payments for kids he may not get to see hardly are 50% of his income. Imagine even more so if the wife was working and contributing her income to the marriage. The husband gets left with all the bills and about 40% of the income used to have to try to pay them. It’s just not right. Switch the genders and I feel the same way about it.

The system lacks equality. Gender equality is becoming a reality more and more. This became tragically obvious when Sgt. Jeannette Winters was the first woman to die in America’s War on Terror. All that equality gets thrown out the door when a marriage is dissolved. It’s sickening that when it suits the social mores, all the PC bullshit that everyone vociferously banters about becomes nothing but a meek mouse in the corner of broken homes.

I don’t know when people forgot that getting married is making a promise in front of God, the community, and your family to give up part of yourself in favor of the well-being of another. I’m not a very religious person and I probably commit sins more than the next guy, but I know that when it comes to my marriage, nothing is my sacred than those vows. That’s what we seem to have forgotten in these modern times. Our lives move to fast and the focus on idividuality has actually become a code-word for rampant selfishness. What will bring us back to our focus and our center?
