How many times have you caught yourself thinking, there aren’t enough hours in the day, or in Taranis’s words, so many bars, so little time? Well then, this next story is for you.
A scientist Olivier de Viron of the Royal Observatory of Belgium has calculated an interested effect of our continued global warming — it’ll make the days longer.
The rate at which the Earth rotates can be varied because of interactions between the solid Earth and its fluid components: the atmosphere, oceans and molten core. The sloshing can increasing or decrease the speed of rotation.
“The atmosphere is known to be one of the largest causes of the variation of the Earth rotation speed,” says de Viron. He has shown that predicted changes in wind, coupled with smaller changes due to ocean currents and atmospheric pressure, as a result of global warming, will add to this natural variability and slow the rotation of the planet.
But don’t waste to much energy getting excited about all the new time you will gain each day. It only amounts to about 1 microsecond, or one millionth of a second, per year. Plan carefully so you don’t waste it.
According to this weeks TIME, a new documentary set to premiere next month at an Austin film festival shows President Bush as we’ve never seen him before. Filmed while Dubbya was on the campaign trail for the 2000 election, then Gov. Bush is seen walking into a cocktail party with people enjoying drinks-a-plenty, saying, “These are my people… it takes and animal to know an animal.” Scenes like this have the White House worried people will remember Bush’s less flattering days when he was arrested for DUI, and his known antics of tipping a few to many back.
The White House has shown a determination to control Dubbya’s image as completely as possible, even restricting photographers from snapping any pictures of Bush with even his tie loosened. Journeys with George was filmed by Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of Nancy Pelosi, the new House Democratic whip.
Other scenes demonstrate Bush more in line with with Deke fraternity president he used to be and not the stable war-room chief he now is. At one point the documentary shows Bush, fresh of his lose in the Michigan primary, wearing a sleeping mask over his eyes as he bumps his way down an airplane aisle - all while mugging for the camera.
Personally, I think the White House has nothing to worry about. While I have not seen the film yet, I can tell you that generally people long for politicians with real personality. Wasn’t that a criticism of Al Gore? (Though having met Al Gore personally and spending some time observing him at an event, I can tell you he has plenty of personality… but I’m digressing.) This film is likely to demonstrate that Bush is a real man with a sense of humor to boot.
And just as the polls indicated in 1996 that most people cared less about Clinton’s sex life and more about the economy, I think the same will hold true now. As long as Clinton wasn’t getting his pole polished during intel briefings, and Bush isn’t slamming back Jack Daniels in the Oval Office, no one is likely to care that much outside of talk show hosts. I like to think that when it comes time to cast the actual vote, people think about their jobs and their future the most.
Then again, maybe I can’t see out of my own ass.
Forget the Oscar’s for a moment. Anti-Bloggies have posted their winners for 2002. Us Llamas sponsored the category, “Most Likely to have a Cheese Sandwich.” The winner is East/West who will win the esteemed prize, Now Let Me Tell You What I Really Think by Chris Matthews.
Congrats East/West. I’ll have your prize in the mail shortly.
