Dawn of the Dead

Because Noble, GA is fairly close to where I live and work, I feel compelled to comment on the abandoning of almost 200 bodies at a crematory there.

My first instinct is to give the ol’ Ray Marsh the benefit of the doubt. Maybe his incinerator really was broken and he was going to cremate the bodies eventually. Then the sheer numbers struck me and I realized that this was a callous grab for cash. So then I think, his father, who ran the crematory until the mid ’90s, couldn’t have known, or else, he would have done something about it. Out comes the detail that the father and mother actually live on the grounds of the crematory. They had to have known what was going on. 5 steel vaults stuffed with bodies don’t hide themselves and they sure as hell don’t smell like roses. Then, I hear that he had just ordered 5 steel septic tanks, presumably to put more bodies in. Does it cost more to buy septic tanks or to actually perform the cremations you are being paid for?

Of course, that’s some of my logical take on it. The real meat of this story is the families who entrusted Mr. Marsh with their loved one’s remains. My first question is what were the ashes made of that he gave them? Was there anything in the urns at all? I’m certain that all the families involved have had to relive the grief they thought they had conquered. They must also now face a justive system that can offer them little solace as the only law Mr. Marsh has broken is theft by deception.

The GA legislature will vote today to make “abandoning a corpse” illegal. That law will come too late for the families of Noble, but I wonder if the families won’t sue the funeral homes that contracted the cremation to Mr. Marsh. I’m no lawyer but that’s the money pit I’d be looking for. Since Mr. Marsh was just doing a job for the funeral homes and it ostensibly would have been their responsibility to ensure that their contractor completed the job, liability may lie with them. Perhaps our resident lawyer, Cosbysweater can enlighten.

A wrong turn at Albuquerque

It seems that the British find the Spanish as weak as everyone else. They accidentally invaded Spain during a military training exercise. Now, I’m no expert on the geography of the place, but I think landing on the island of Gibraltar would be very different then landing on the mainland of Spain.

Imagine the locals surprise when the British hovercraft came in interrupting the all-important siesta. Sitting there drinking some sort of weird alcohol, gnawing on a piece of salted fish and a British MK5 gets shoved in your face. They’ll be talking about it for years. Knowing the Spaniards, I imagine there’ll be a civil war because of this.

N’SYNC cut from Star Wars?

There is some conflicting news on the final fate of N’SYNC and their Star Wars Episode 2 cameo. No, they were not tapped to sing in the Mos Eisley pub, but rather they were slated to play Jedi Knights in a large fight scene. The original reports were they were all going to die.

But N’SYNC member Joey Fatone (who shockingly looks exactly like my cousin) reported in an interview with Carson Daily that the N’SYNC scene is going to be cut from the film because of negative fan reaction.

Before you break out the vermouth to celebrate, Lynne Hale of LucasFilm says only Lucas really knows and he’ll make that decision when he does the final editing in May.

George, listen… admit it, you screwed the pooch with Jar Jar. Please don’t make us fans swallow N’SYNC, even if it is only a split-second cameo. Lord of the Rings is nipping at your heals as the best trilogy. By pulling shit like N’SYNC cameo’s, you’re hurting the series.

Oh. Look how I spoke to George in the first person above. Like he actually reads this site…

“So blog this, please.”

Ok, I will.

Henry Jenkins has written on interesting article on web logs, or blogs as they have come to be known.

Bloggers are turning the hunting and gathering, sampling and critiquing the rest of us do online into an extreme sport. We surf the Web; these guys snowboard it. Bloggers are the minutemen of the digital revolution.

While I’m not sure I’d consider this site a blog, I did find Jenkins thoughts on them to be interesting.

What will happen to democracy in the current media environment, where power is concentrated in the hands of a few publishers and networks? Media scholar Robert McChesney warns that the range of voices in policy debates will become constrained. The University of Chicago Law School’s Cass Sunstein worries that fragmentation of the Web is apt to result in the loss of the shared values and common culture that democracy requires. As consumers, we experience these dual tensions: turn on the TV and it feels like the same programs are on all the channels; turn to the Web and it’s impossible to distinguish the good stuff from the noise. Bloggers respond to both extremes, expanding the range of perspectives and, if they’re clever, creating order from the informational chaos.

Jenkins ends his artilce with, “So blog this, please.” OK. Reply to this, please.

Now can we get on with the rest of the Olympics?

Amidst claims of vote-swaping, predetermined outcomes, and other finger pointing, Olympic officials have awarded Canadian skaters Jamie Sale and David Pelletier gold medals. The Russian team who beat the Canadians in the controversial judging will get to keep their gold medals as well.

The International Skating Union also suspended French figure skating judge, Marie-Reine Le Gougne, saying they had evidence of misconduct.

This story has overshadowed the Olympics to the extent that nearly every other news story was regulated to below the fold. Even CNN is giving this story higher priority than the Afhgani government assassination carried out by its own military.

Not enough hours in the day?

How many times have you caught yourself thinking, there aren’t enough hours in the day, or in Taranis’s words, so many bars, so little time? Well then, this next story is for you.

A scientist Olivier de Viron of the Royal Observatory of Belgium has calculated an interested effect of our continued global warming — it’ll make the days longer.

The rate at which the Earth rotates can be varied because of interactions between the solid Earth and its fluid components: the atmosphere, oceans and molten core. The sloshing can increasing or decrease the speed of rotation.

“The atmosphere is known to be one of the largest causes of the variation of the Earth rotation speed,” says de Viron. He has shown that predicted changes in wind, coupled with smaller changes due to ocean currents and atmospheric pressure, as a result of global warming, will add to this natural variability and slow the rotation of the planet.

But don’t waste to much energy getting excited about all the new time you will gain each day. It only amounts to about 1 microsecond, or one millionth of a second, per year. Plan carefully so you don’t waste it.

Just when things were going so well

According to this weeks TIME, a new documentary set to premiere next month at an Austin film festival shows President Bush as we’ve never seen him before. Filmed while Dubbya was on the campaign trail for the 2000 election, then Gov. Bush is seen walking into a cocktail party with people enjoying drinks-a-plenty, saying, “These are my people… it takes and animal to know an animal.” Scenes like this have the White House worried people will remember Bush’s less flattering days when he was arrested for DUI, and his known antics of tipping a few to many back.

The White House has shown a determination to control Dubbya’s image as completely as possible, even restricting photographers from snapping any pictures of Bush with even his tie loosened. Journeys with George was filmed by Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of Nancy Pelosi, the new House Democratic whip.

Other scenes demonstrate Bush more in line with with Deke fraternity president he used to be and not the stable war-room chief he now is. At one point the documentary shows Bush, fresh of his lose in the Michigan primary, wearing a sleeping mask over his eyes as he bumps his way down an airplane aisle - all while mugging for the camera.

Personally, I think the White House has nothing to worry about. While I have not seen the film yet, I can tell you that generally people long for politicians with real personality. Wasn’t that a criticism of Al Gore? (Though having met Al Gore personally and spending some time observing him at an event, I can tell you he has plenty of personality… but I’m digressing.) This film is likely to demonstrate that Bush is a real man with a sense of humor to boot.

And just as the polls indicated in 1996 that most people cared less about Clinton’s sex life and more about the economy, I think the same will hold true now. As long as Clinton wasn’t getting his pole polished during intel briefings, and Bush isn’t slamming back Jack Daniels in the Oval Office, no one is likely to care that much outside of talk show hosts. I like to think that when it comes time to cast the actual vote, people think about their jobs and their future the most.

Then again, maybe I can’t see out of my own ass.

And Speaking of Winners…

Forget the Oscar’s for a moment. Anti-Bloggies have posted their winners for 2002. Us Llamas sponsored the category, “Most Likely to have a Cheese Sandwich.” The winner is East/West who will win the esteemed prize, Now Let Me Tell You What I Really Think by Chris Matthews.

Congrats East/West. I’ll have your prize in the mail shortly.

And the Winner is…

Today the nominees for the 74th Academy Awards were announced. Not surprizingly, Lord of the Rings led the pack with 13 nominations. I was pleased to see Will Smith get a nomination for Ali, though I think Denzel Washington is long overdue.
