“Black Jack” Pershing

I received this by email today. As with most things of this nature, I am wary of its validity:

—————————————————
GENERAL “BLACK JACK” PERSHING

General “Black Jack” Pershing was born September 13th, 1860 near Laclede, MS. he died July 15th, 1948 in Washington, DC
Highlights of his life include:
1891 Professor of Military Science and Tactics University of Nebraska
1898 Serves in the Spanish-American War
1901 Awarded rank of Captain
1906 Promoted to rank of Brig. General
1909 Military Governor of Moro Province, Philippines
1916 Made Major General
1919 Promoted to General of the Armies
1921 Appointed Chief of Staff
1924 Retires from active duty Education West Point.

Just before World War I, there were a number of terrorist attacks on the United States forces in the Philippines by Muslim extremists. So General Pershing captured 50 terrorists and had them tied to posts for execution. He then had his men bring in two pigs and slaughter them in front of the, now horrified, terrorists. Muslims detest! pork because they believe pigs are filthy animals. Some of them simply refuse to eat it, while others won’t even touch pigs at all, nor any of their byproducts. To them, eating or touching a pig, its meat, its blood, etc., is to be instantly barred from paradise (and those virgins) and doomed to hell. The soldiers then soaked their bullets in the pigs blood, and proceeded to execute 49 of the terrorists by firing squad. The soldiers then dug a big hole, dumped in the terrorist’s bodies and covered them in pig blood, entrails, etc. They let the 50th man go. And for the next forty-two years, there was not a single Muslim extremist attack anywhere in the world. Maybe it is time for this segment of history to repeat itself, maybe in Iraq? The question is, where do we find another Black Jack Pershing?
———————————————————-

I think it’s interesting in that it points out 2 very different ideals. One, it needs to be made clear to these extremists that killing is never a way into paradise. Two, those of us at the receiving end of Muslim extremism should realize that buying into their beliefs merely validates those beliefs. Though this story would have you believe Pershing’s horrific treatment of his prisoners was the reason for so much peace, I think that if this event happened at all, it was merely coincidence.

I suspect World War I and World War II kept the world pretty busy for the 50 years after this supposed event. At any rate, stories like these, show the weaknesses of both “sides” of this conflict. Can any fight between a group based on religious beliefs and a group based on intellectual beliefs ever truly come to an end?

I can’t say whether this happened or not, but, if it did, it was truly hardcore. However, it sounds a bit much like a combination of the prom scene from “Carrie” and the origin of Keyser Soze, if you ask me.

Either way, the lack of extremists attacks, if true, was probably not due to this legend. If terrorists were scared of dying, they wouldn’t be terrorists.

Taranis sounds like your typical bleeding heart liberal. If we fought terrorism with terrorist we would probably defeat the weak minded bastards. All they’ve ever known is the “big stick.” As we are learning with our children, most of the time, the quiet chair doesn’t work. If you go easy on these guys they just manipulate you and grow stronger. Black Jack Pershing had the right idea and I don’t think WWI and WWII had much to do with the slow down. Pig blood them all! But for that liberal I suggest not slaughtering pigs just for this. Use byproducts of an existing slaugherhouse process.

Well Buzzy, if you’ll notice I neither denounced or condoned Pershing’s message. I instead pointed out that there was no easy solution to the situation. Instead, drastic measures, like the one Pershing took, are the only logical answer. But I’m not sure if they are wholly effective.

Moreover, I was merely commenting on this one anecdote that is being used as evidence of a solution to terrorism. Frankly, I think that if they never mentioned the word terrorism in the media again, that would have a bigger effect than some massive bloodbath.

Lastly, if you think I am a bleeding-heart liberal, then perhaps, you should read the rest of our site.

It is amazing how a rational argument can promote the understanding and alter behavior of fanatics.

There’s a guy in my golf club that’s the king of urban legends and hoaxes. (He actually believes that “Fornication Under Consent of King” is an acronym for the “F” word)…. Imagine that!

Anyhow, this one is a total load of hooey… The only thing they had right was Gen. Pershing was over in the Phillipines and had some conflicts with some sultans. There was no pork involved.

Hi. I don’t know about any site, but someone just sent me this e-mail too. I had gotten one weeks ago without the name of Black Jack Pershing attached to it, so I also have doubted it’s validity. So I decided to check this Mr. Pershing out. He has a great rep for compassion and caring for people of different cultures, two of whom I found in his bio were blacks in the military, and Native American Indians, whom he became a teacher to. As somone who enjoys and got my AA in History I find that the middle east and/or dealing with Muslim extremists very interesting, and there are no easy answers. Both have changed very little in thousands of years, the religion is about the only way one can reach or affect them. I would say as they are extremists, it’s hard not to respond in an extremist way. It’s obvious change is a rare part of their vocabulary.

I don’t know if this incident actually happened either, but JMO, if something like it would save many other lives by ending a long drawn out war then I truly don’t see a problem. Our biggest problem in war has always been trying to think of it on our terms, through the eyes of our culture, rather than theirs. Thanks for an interesting discussion.

I had an email “Joke” about this story sent

to me the other week, and it certainly made me

think! If readers care to take a look at a

website called http://www.bible.ca/islam-kills-

muhammad-seeds-terrorism one can see for

oneself the origins of the islamic religion.

One of America’s most famous Army officers, Pershing was born in Missouri on September 13, 1860. He graduated from West Point in 1886 and served in the Spanish-American War, the Philippines Insurrection, the Mexican Expedition and was the overall American Commander in Europe during World War I.

The email running around the internet about General Pershing is not true. He did serve a number of times in the Philippines, and a major part of his duties were to establish peace in the recently Spain-liberated island chain. This included bringing about a ‘cease fire’ between the majority christian and minority islamic population. He mainly accomplished this through peaceful negotiations, and when it was necessary to use force, he treated the vanquished with dignity. By the end of his service in the Philippines, he was respected by the entire population of the islands. Never once did General Pershing do what was attributed to him in the email message. I hope his wonderful military and humanitarian history is not permanently marred by the distribution of these false statements.

I too received this email and went about trying to find if true or not. What I did find was this link. http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/johnjose.htm

If you read the part about the Philippines you’ll probably find a more accurate reason for the lack of terrorist attacks. Persing was indeed a great leader. He doesn’t need us to attribute this task to him.

Muslims have already circumvented this approach.

\
Palestinian Muslims reacted with scorn to the idea, saying the soul went to paradise and was unaffected by any taint to the body.

“The keys to heaven are not in the hands of settlers,” said Sheikh Hassan Youssef, for Hamas, whose military wing has sent dozens of suicide bombers into Israel.

Islamic reference books say the body of a martyr who dies for the faith is so pure that it does not need to be washed before burial, in contrast to the usual Muslim practice.

Well - to summerise from the Arlington Cemetary site:

Late in 1908 General Pershing’s health broke down and he was sent with his family to Europe to keep in touch with the Balkan situation. There were rumors that his career was ended, but Pershing fully recovered and at the end of 1909 he returned to the Philippines as commander of the Moro Province of Mindanao.

Trouble again was brewing among the Mohammedan tribesmen, and in 1911 a serious outbreak came on the island of Jolo. Pershing again led his men in a series of battles which resulted in the final pacification of the tribes in 1913. Pershing then went about among the recent rebels, showing them that there was no animosity on the part of the Americans and that so long as they were peaceable they could count on friendliness and justice. He won the hearts of the various chieftains and their followers and was made a “datto,” a native ruler, in recognition of their respect and confidence.

In his report to his officers on the Bagsak engagement, General Pershing set out his policy for conciliating the rebels. “In this hour of exultation,” he wrote, “let us not forget the vanquished foe.” Saying that they fought with “an unswerving courage and a superb gallantry,” he directed:

“Let our assurances of good-will be extended to him in his defeat, and let no opportunity be allowed to pass to do a kindly act or to extend a word of encouragement to this brave people.”

It seems that the General was one of the best the world has seen - what a shame to tarnish his name.

No, Black Jack Pershings recipe wouldn’t work in Iraq, because most of the terrorists, who came to Iraq during the last month’ , were Christians.

John Pershing did his homework. He knew that the Muslim belief that contact with something as dirty as a pig would come in handy one day. One biography points out that John Pershing showed a bucket of pig’s blood as a threat to the sanctity of the Moro tribe leaders in order to force them to sign a peace treaty. This, only after forcing them to listen to anglo-saxon music on an edison phonograph, to which the tribal elders were apalled. Pershing could not understand why the Moros preferred their odd bell-clanging gamelon-like stirrings to the beauty of an old saw from the states.

I just received this e-mail.

The first thing I noticed was his birth place.

Gen. Pershing was from Missouri (MO) NOT Mississippi (MS). Laclede is about half way between Hannibal & St. Joseph on Hwy 36. There is a State Park in his honor near by.

Maybe, whoever put this together just didn’t know that Missouri is ‘MO’. But that is why I went looking to verify the other info!

As far as I know, the story about the bullets deeped in pig skin is a true one.
General Pershing is quite famous, and there are a few biographies of him available at your nearest bookstore or library.
For starters, here’s a nice note on him:

Hi Guys, I an Not much of an religious person, myself; but it seems to me that the ratio of fanatics and/or extremists for Baptists/Methodist is about 1 out of 2 or 3 hundred.. For Muslims, it seems to be 1 out of every 5 or 6.. U can draw your on comclusions..
As far as the Black Jack Pershing story; can’t vouch for its validity.. I say we (Americans/British) should consider something similar; maybe with some variations.. Like instead of shooting the terrorist; put the terrorist in a vat or hole filled with pig blood and see how long they can hold their breathe.. Plus any of their family members should be put in jail about the age of say - 13.. If that does not work maybe they should get the same treatment (the Vat).. For one thing that keep the terrorists family from collecting the $25,000 that they are paid.. I believe I can stop a dog from sucking eggs; with some folks you just have to step up the anti..

WOW! It simply amazes me that so many so called academic wanna be…s Try to justify their answer by saying “Well..where is the documented evidence”. As though someone is gonna come out and say ” Oh yea, JFK was killed by this guy at this time….” conjecture is all we have.. Concerning the Blackjack Pershing Episode, can you possibly imagine someone documenting such a blatant abuse of power and human rights. You think the General wanted the War department to know about this? Consider General Custer. He tore ass through the Dakotas pillaging all the Native american villages..without regard to the differences between combatants and non-combatants…Sure the President heard rumors…but was there documentation…NO..Only the word of the Natives who witnessed it….
Taje the rape of Nanking. We have a few speculative pictures and some angry, bitter old chinese…did it happen? well probably..since so many say YES…. Let’s be sure about this and for posterity…lets ask the elders in the Moro community of the validity of this story… Then, based on past recorded history…”if the eyewitnesses say it did/didn’t happen then you can get on your soap box and say oh yea…. this is the truth..” meantime… read, BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE…then tell me if Black Jack’s generation could not have possibly done such a terrible thing….. study Native American History…and the Spanish conquest of central and south america……then your eyes will be open. Naked force and aggression was the way of the 19th century… Or did you think the Mexicans gave us california….. Nah we took it.. thanks! And unfortunately its true today. We attacked the Taliban in response to 9/11… It knock them down considerably. If you actually take the time to go the Middle east and talk to these people, you will see that they have a different sense of right and wrong…… And a different take on Honor…. God told David to destroy these people then while he could of or else the JEWS would be fighting them for eternity (Sorry for the religious reference…but its so compelling)

I dont know about the validity of this tale but we definately need to be more agressive toward our radical enemies. We need to understand and take advantage of their weaknesses. In short…”Let them hate, so long as they fear”

The interesting fact is that people don’t believe it happened. Even History Profs. say No way! But yet, if you look at the body of evidence availible about the US involvment in the PI,you’ll see that the troopers who defeated the native Americans, were sent to PI to “beat down” the same type of indiginious population in PI….”kill every male 10 years and over” was their cry. So be it! Pershing did far less than Custer!!!! Thats a fact! It happened! So you wonder if it Pershing did a bad thing? Look at the time period in the history books! Islam only respects force!!!
